🏛️ Field Visit to Archaeological Sites in Old Goa

The Department of History organized a field visit for the students of FYBA SEC History (Introduction to Archaeology) to various archaeological and heritage sites in Old Goa.
The visit aimed to provide students with hands-on exposure to architectural styles, conservation practices, and cultural history, enriching their understanding of Goa’s archaeological landscape.


🏰 Sites Visited

Students visited the following historically significant sites in Old Goa, all of which are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and many of which are recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage list:

  • ⛪ Church of St. Francis of Assisi – Noted for its unique blend of Tuscan, Corinthian, and Baroque architectural elements.

  • 🏛️ Viceroy’s Arch – A prominent landmark symbolizing Portuguese rule in Goa.

  • ⛪ Church of St. Cajetan – Inspired by St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, reflecting classical architecture.

  • 🙏 Chapel of St. Catherine – Built to commemorate the arrival of the Portuguese in Goa in 1510.

  • 🏗️ St. Augustine Tower – The majestic ruins of an Augustinian church, one of the largest once built in Goa.

  • ✝️ Basilica of Bom Jesus – A UNESCO World Heritage Site, housing the sacred relics of St. Francis Xavier.

  • 🚪 Gate of the Palace of Adil Shah – A historic remnant from the pre-Portuguese era of Goa’s history.


👩‍🎓 Participation

A total of 22 students enthusiastically participated in the field visit, gaining practical knowledge of archaeological study methods and appreciating the importance of heritage preservation.


✨ Conclusion

The visit offered students a unique opportunity to connect theory with practice, enabling them to observe and analyze historical monuments, architectural details, and cultural evolution firsthand.
It served as a valuable learning experience, fostering awareness of Goa’s historical identity and global heritage significance.
